Wilton's Fondant

I am new to cake decorating and my first (only) cake I decorated was using Wilton Fondant. The cake was for my 6 year old's birthday. After the party I got some requests for other cakes...3 birthday and 1 wedding anniversary and am very excited about making these cakes.

I didn't really like the taste of the fondant. Is Wilton the only type of ready made fondant? Should I just make my own, and is that a difficult task? Should I just use buttercream only?

Basically I'm saying...HHHHEEEEELLLLLLLPPP?

You have a much wider range of fondant in the USA than we do here, we have a couple of of brand names white, ivory and some basic colours and that's it, you guys on the other hand can get a huge range of colours, I'm always so jealous of that!

Maybe one of the US girls could offer a couple of suggestions in way of suppliers, it's a little hard for us to give you any definitive answers as different brands, different tastes, different climate zones etc.

For making your own, try checking out our recipe section there are a couple there. The best suggestion I can give is that you try a few different ones including a home made one until you find one you like!

You can get Bakels fondant in the US. The is a lovely lady in Montanta who has an ebay shop. Im sure she can send you in the right direction.

I had heard of a fondant called FondX (that may be wrong) but it's something like that. Has anyone else heard of this and also a fondant that is white chocolate fondant. I've heard of some decorators saying that both of those taste better than Wiltons.

Here is a company that seems to carry all of the brands available in the U.S. except Chocopan. I have not tried that fondarific so can't vouch for it. I have used SatinIce, Pettinice and Fondx, of those I prefer Fondx virgin white. And I like SatinIce for precolored fondant though I do usually add more powdered sugar because it tends to be a bit soft, especially if it is the darker colors.

I like fondex too, it can be quite bit more expensive than bakels though. I believe the chocolate one is chocopan but could be wrong, haven't seen it over here.

I now have coloured fondant in stock from Renshaw . It's called Regalice and comes in 15 colours. I find it great to work with!

I agree with you Wilton fondant is not pleasant.

Chocopan is very nice to work with, has a pleasant chocolate taste, but as its made with chocolate there is no white just various shades of ivory/cream.

Pettinice is also nice to work with.

I only have used Wilton too and just like you I dont really like the taste. I have heard of SatinIce and Pettinice and want to try them. I have been looking for local suppliers but it seems that I can only buy them over the internet.

Most of my USA cake decorating friends order most of their sugarcraft supplies via the internet

Dinosaur....I'm in the same boat, I can't find any local suppliers and I'm in Las Vegas (go figure). I can only order online. I haven't got comfortable with the whole online ordering yet. I've never ordered anything online before but I guess I'm gonna have to give it a go because I really NEED different fondant. More and more people are asking me to do cakes for them and I'd hate to charge for a cake that people have to peel off the fondant. I'm also going to try to make my own.

Girls - its all about DEMAND & SUPPLY - if you go to where you purchase your fondant and tell them about a 'new' product that you are after and give them a place where they can purchase (ie an internet address) I think they will be most accommodating if you explain why you are seeking it.... better flavour, better to work with - there is a HUGE market in the US and I am sure plenty of people would be willing to take a gamble on a new product.

Ahhhh....great answer!!! I'm going to have to try that. I don't know how it would go over though because I purchase my fondant from a crafts store and from my understanding the carry Wilton products exclusively. I sure don't mind asking though. We'll see though and I'll be sure to let you know what happens.

Have you tried roll out buttercream? My friend in Bakersfield California went on a course and loves using it.

If you're in Las Vegas did you attend the Cake Camp at the Riviera (31st July - 3rd August) as I was one of the instructors.
The next one is again at the Riviera SEPTEMBER 17-20, 2009 and then of course there is the ICES convention in San Diego in 2010.

I've heard of the Satin Ice. What I've heard is the taste is good and easy to work with. I can't vouch for it myself because I use mostly buttercream. Very Happy
