Post by ozcake on Fri Sep 05, 2008 5:55 pm

Hi Everyone,

Not sure if you are all familiar with Mike McCarey aka Mike's Amazing Cakes http://www.mikesamazingcakes.com (yes his cakes really are amazing!) well he has just put out a DVD called Cakenology - Episode1 Car Cakes where he shows you step by step how to make a 3D car cake. I received mine today Woo hoo and watched it this arvo, I am not sure if it is as easy as he makes it look but I am looking forward to giving it a go, I just need an excuse to make a car cake now...

Toni they didn't have the online ordering set-up when I ordered mine (not sure when that is going to be ready) so emailed them and asked them if I could do it via email and they said I could if I was comfortable giving my credit card details over email, then I thought oh maybe I shouldn't and tried calling a couple of times but kept getting answering machine so decided to go with the email.

Hubby & I discussed the safest way to do this and we deliberately made no mention of the word credit card in the heading or body/text of the email and I scanned my details (cc number, address details etc) and saved them as a picture (again no mention of CC in the name of the file either) which I attached. So far nobody seems to have run off with our number & spent up big but each person would need to make their own assessment of risk and decide accordingly (I am not promoting this method just saying what I did).

If you are more patient than me you might want to wait for the online ordering but I am a big fan of Mike's work and just HAD to have it and NOW, IYKWIM Wink. By the way the shipping was $15US for "international" so I think it is same for all countries, it took a week to get here.

The DVD is goes for 2 hours and is very thorough it shows pretty much every detail, I can't think of anything he didn't show other than the baking of the cake. After talking about reference material & templates, he starts with filling the layers, shows all the carving, crumb coating, icing with buttercream, covering with fondant, all the little details and how to get it all proportionate & looking like a real mustang or whatever car. I felt that he explained things well, in simple terms.
