How do I prevent excess icing sugar on fondant
Hello
Ok sorry if this is a silly question but I made my daughters 1st birthday cake yesterday and there is some icing sugar still on the fondant. I left it overnight and it is still there this morning. I have brushed off what I could with my hand but there is still some there and as the fondant is musk pink it is noticable.
Will it go on its own?? Or what else can I do to brush it off??
Ta xx

if you have brushed it off with a pastry brush, maybe rub the entire cake with some shortening on a clean paper towel. Sugarshack does that in her dvd as a remedy for cornflour marks.
Dont rub too much or too hard, just a light hand over the entire cake and it should help. At least I hope so!

Re: How do I prevent excess icing sugar on fondant
Thanks ladies
Tried the pastry brush, wasn't any good.
Tried the ball of icing, didn't help it.
But......... The oil worked an absolute treat
Ok feeling heaps better now. Thanks again.

Re: How do I prevent excess icing sugar on fondant
Hello
can I ask a silly question? how did so much icing sugar get on the 'outside' of of the fondant icing?... when I roll out my fondant, I never flip it over, so that the icing sugar clings only to one side of the fondant: the bottom. then when placing it on the cake, the side which is on the bottom on the work surface becomes the botton side on the cake. (hope that is makes sense...)
is that what you do?
ciao

It does not matter what the question is; the answer is chocolate!

I understand what you mean. Don't get me wrong there wasn't a truckload of icing just a persistant bit that wouldn't budge. I think it was from the rolling pin.
Just so you know this was only my second cake so I probably used more icing sugar than actually needed but it was all trial and error for me.

I know just how you feel MrsG! I recently did my second cak tooe...did you also wind up with icing sugar over most of the kitchen like I did?
Would love to see a photo of your cake!“My therapist told me the way to achieve true inner peace is to finish what I start. So far today, I have finished 2 bags of M&M's and a chocolate cake. I feel better already.” - Dave Barry

OK, so it all makes sense now. You were being carerful to make sure the fondant did not stick to the work surface, So you had sprinkled extra icing sugar on the work surface. You had sugar beyond the perimeter of the fondant as you were rolling it. The rolling pin picked a bit of it up as you rolled. The pressure of rolling imbedded it into the top of the fondant.... sound right?
I don't know about other decorators out there, but this is what I do: I keep a small clean tea towel near my work space; if I see icing sugar on my rolling pin, I wipe it off right away with the towel. Prevents problems later.
these are the kinds of little problems and nuisances that we log as 'learning from our experiences'.
I am sure that your third cake will be perfect!
It would be nice to see your 2nd cake, please do post an image. and feel free to ask questions. there are so many great, helpful, knowledgeable, experienced members on this site!

ceecups- Yeah icing sugar was pretty much everywhere, including on my clothes!!!!
fascination- Yep you pretty much have it right. And yep, I have learned from that experience. I have never done a cake dec class or anything so everything I learned has come from this site.
Here is the cake................

WOW!
It's beautiful! Looks very professional! It's hard to believe that this is only your second fondant cake!
nice pearls, the icing is smooth, great color combination, the rose is a great touch & I especially like the way you decorated the cupcake!
Bravo!!
can't wait to see cake 3 and 4 and 5 etc etc etc

Re: How do I prevent excess icing sugar on fondant
Your cake is great for a second! I often have that problem with the icing sugar. Ive just covered a board this afternoon and have excess icing on it! Im going to try the oil because Ive also tried the other options!
Re: How do I prevent excess icing sugar on fondant
Ohhh thank you.
I have definetly learn't alot from doing this cake, from making the bottome tier bigger, covering the cake board and the ribbon and also the use of ummm icing sugar!!
But everyone loved it and my daughter especially so that means so much to me, the learning part is just a bonus.
Now I have the bug, I want to make more cakes but I dont have any occasions coming up for another month!!!!
Sina- The oil trick was fantastic, totally absorbs all the oil straight away. You only need a light spray though.

Re: How do I prevent excess icing sugar on fondant
Ohhh I just wanted to add that I copied the design off another member- Kiwicakes. So I don't want to take any credit for the design. It was just to gorgeous and matched my daughters cupcake theme so I had to give it a go.
Re: How do I prevent excess icing sugar on fondant
Mrs G! i love this cake you did.. and I also like the fact that the pearls don't go all the way around.. draws attention to the front of the cake. I actually use loads of icing sugar when I decorate, and every time I do, I can hear all the decorators tutt tutting in my head
... I just find it easier for me to smooth fondant onto cakes if I have a good smattering of icing sugar!
